Hamilton County Schools’ Dr. Bryan Johnson is one of only four superintendents across the nation named a finalist for the School Superintendents Association’s (AASA) 2021 National Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Johnson was selected in September as 2021 Tennessee Superintendent of the Year by the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents (TOSS), and went on to represent the Tennessee AASA national program.

“I am honored to be considered for National Superintendent of the Year,” said Dr. Johnson. “This recognition isn’t about my work but it’s about the collective work of our amazing school board, teachers, staff, parents and community, who have all been laser-focused on serving children.”

Dr. Johnson has served as Hamilton County Schools superintendent since 2017.

In his tenure as superintendent, Dr. Johnson started the Opportunity Zone to address rapid school improvement in 12 of the district’s low performing schools. Additionally, he launched Future Ready Institutes in the district’s high schools to make learning more meaningful for today’s teens and provide future-ready graduates prepared for success after graduation.

The program was so successful in the first year that it was awarded the Urban League of Chattanooga’s Community Impact Award.

AASA is a professional organization that serves more than 13,000 educational leaders and recognizes the talent as well as vision of public school leaders annually through its National Superintendent of the Year program.

The selection criteria for the award includes learning leadership, communication, professionalism and community involvement. The final interviews for National Superintendent of the Year will take place on Jan. 8. The winner will be announced at the virtual National Conference on Education on Feb. 18.
