The Southeastern Region of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. has chosen the Chattanooga News Chronicle as winner of its 2022 Bigger Better Business Award.

The News Chronicle will be recognized during the fraternity’s Image Award Gala Dinner on March 26 at 7 p.m., in the ballroom of the Chattanoogan Hotel, 1201 Broad St.

“The Chattanooga News Chronicle has been selected because it demonstrates business excellence and the highest standards of ethical conduct, integrity and civic and social responsibility,” said Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Eastern Tennessee State Director Arthur Benton.

The theme of this year’s Image Award Gala Dinner is “Celebrating Our Legacy of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.”

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on. Jan. 9, 1914, by three African American students. The founders–A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse and Charles I. Brown–wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship and service.

From its inception, the founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community.

Today, Phi Beta Sigma Inc. has blossomed into an international organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the fraternity have established the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The Sigma Beta Club Foundation.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization of the fraternity.

The “Super” Southeastern Region of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. consists of nearly 100 undergraduate and alumni chapters in East Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina.

The fraternity’s motto is “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity.”

The Chattanooga News Chronicle was founded in 1989 by John L. Edwards III, his wife, Faith, and his son Adrian to make sure the African American community was highlighted and reported on in a positive and encouraging manner.

Through the newspaper, the Edwards family has over the years played a major role in writing the stories that call out and confront systemic racism and injustice.
