Hendrell Remus.
The Tennessee Democratic Party’s executive committee last week elected Hendrell Remus as the new party chairman.
He takes over the party from three-term chair Mary Mancini.
Remus is the first Black person in state history to be chair of any major political party and at 34-years-old he’s making even more history.
“I’m also the first millennial to serve in this role,” the Memphis native pointed out.
Remus majored in business management at Excelsior College, and has been active in the Tennessee Democratic Party all of his life. He served as a member of the TNDP Executive Committee, as well as the TN National Committeeman for Young Democrats of America.
Before being chosen as TNDP chair, Remus worked with Tennessee State University as the assistant director of Emergency Management.
Prior to that, he managed people, major organizations and high-dollar projects as the Middle Tennessee operations manager for Allied Universal–one of the largest private security firms in North America.
“I am humbled and elated at the opportunity to serve as the Tennessee Democratic Party Chair,” Remus said. “This is not just a moment of accomplishment for my family and I, but a historic moment for our party and indeed for our state.”
Remus said one of the many things he aims to do in his new position is get more people to the polls and unite Democrats across the state.
“The road ahead will be tough and full of unknown obstacles,” Remus told the executive committee after his election. “I’m ready to get to work.”
He will serve a two-year term.
The executive committee also elected Barbara Wagner as vice-chair, Pam Weston as secretary and Carol Abney as treasurer.
